Chimney & Vent FAQ
Straight answers to the questions DeKalb-area homeowners ask us most — about sweeping, inspections, repairs, relining, gas fireplaces and vents.
How often should I have my chimney swept?
Once a year for a wood-burning fireplace or stove in regular use — ideally before burning season. Gas and pellet appliances still need an annual venting check.
Do you inspect before you sweep?
Yes. Every visit begins with a camera inspection so we know the flue’s real condition before cleaning, and we flag anything that needs repair.
What is creosote and why is it dangerous?
Creosote is the flammable residue wood smoke leaves in the flue as it cools. Enough of it can ignite into a chimney fire, which is why annual removal is the core of chimney safety.
When do I need a Level 2 inspection?
When buying or selling a home, changing your heating appliance or fuel, or after a chimney fire or other event that may have damaged the chimney.
My chimney is leaking — what causes that?
Usually a cracked crown, failed flashing at the roofline, or porous brick and mortar. We trace the leak to its real source rather than sealing the symptom. See chimney repair.
How do I know if my chimney needs relining?
Flue-tile pieces in the firebox, a past chimney fire, a new appliance that doesn’t match the flue, or a failed inspection all point to relining. A camera scan confirms it.
Does a gas fireplace need service?
Yes — an annual tune-up cleans the burner and glass and checks the venting, pilot and gas valve for safety.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year for most homes; more often for large households or long vent runs. Clogged dryer vents are a leading cause of home dryer fires.
Do you charge a trip fee for towns outside DeKalb?
No — all the towns in our service area are part of our regular route, with no extra trip charge.
Are you insured and bonded?
Yes. Imperial Chimney Sweepers is fully insured and bonded, and we work to NFPA 211 standards on every job.
