Masonry vs. factory-built chimneys: two different systems
Not every chimney is brick, and the difference matters for how it is maintained. A traditional masonry chimney is built of brick, block and clay-tile liner — heavy, durable, and repairable piece by piece over a long life. A factory-built, or prefab, chimney is a manufactured metal system: a firebox and a double- or triple-wall metal flue, topped outside by a framed chase with a metal chase cover instead of a masonry crown. Both are safe when maintained, but they age and fail differently.
Masonry chimneys need tuckpointing, crown repair and relining as the brick and clay weather. Prefab systems do not have those parts, but they have their own weak points: the chase cover, which if made of galvanized steel will rust and streak the siding within a decade, and the cap and the metal flue itself, which have manufacturer specifications and clearances that must be respected. Using the wrong replacement part on a prefab unit, or a masonry-style repair on a metal system, can void safety listings.
