How Cold Weather Affects Your Chimney Draft

By Chuck Lee · Imperial Chimney Sweepers · October 28, 2026

Winter is when you use your fireplace most, and it’s also when draft problems show up. Creston’s cold snaps change the way air moves through your chimney, and understanding that helps you get better fires all season.

The Cold Chimney Problem

Draft depends on the air inside the flue being warmer than the air outside. On a bitterly cold day, the entire chimney is chilled, and the heavy cold air inside wants to sink rather than rise. That’s why the first few minutes of a fire can be smoky and reluctant in deep winter. The flue hasn’t warmed enough to establish an upward pull. Homeowners across Creston count on timely attention to keep their systems safe.

Priming the Flue

There’s a simple trick that works. Before lighting the main fire, roll a sheet of newspaper, light it, and hold it up near the open damper for a minute or two. This warms the air at the top of the firebox and starts the column moving in the right direction. Once you feel the draft reverse and begin pulling upward, light your fire and it will catch cleanly. Our chimney inspection service covers exactly this kind of work.

Exterior Chimneys Struggle More

Chimneys built on an outside wall lose heat to the cold faster than those running up through the center of the house. If your chimney is on an exterior wall, expect it to be slower to warm and quicker to cool between fires. A properly sized insulated liner helps the flue hold heat and draft more consistently through the coldest weeks.

When It’s More Than the Cold

If priming doesn’t help and smoke keeps spilling even after the fire is hot, the issue may be a blockage, an undersized or oversized flue, or house pressure problems that worsen in winter when everything is sealed tight. A cold-weather inspection can pinpoint the cause so you’re not fighting your fireplace all season.

Burn Habits for the Coldest Days

On frigid mornings, a few habits make winter fires easier. Start with plenty of dry kindling and small splits to build heat fast, since a hot start establishes draft quicker than a slow smolder. Keep the damper fully open until the fire is well established, and avoid overloading the firebox at first. Once the flue is warm and drawing strongly, you can settle into a steady burn. Working with the cold instead of fighting it means fewer smoky starts and a more comfortable room through the heart of winter.
