New to Your Sandwich Home? A First-Timer’s Chimney Guide
If you just moved into a Sandwich home with a fireplace, congratulations — and a few things are worth knowing before you light that first fire in a chimney whose history you don’t know.
Start with an inspection
You have no idea how the previous owner maintained the chimney, whether it has been swept in years, or what condition the liner is in. A camera inspection tells you its real condition and whether it is safe to use — the single most important step for a new homeowner, and the foundation for everything else.
Learn your fireplace
Identify what you actually have: a traditional masonry wood-burning fireplace, a factory-built (prefab) unit, a gas fireplace, or a wood or gas insert. Each is maintained differently. Find the damper and confirm it opens and closes fully, and locate any gas shutoff if you have a gas unit.
Know the difference in care
A masonry chimney needs sweeping, tuckpointing and eventual relining as the brick and clay age. A prefab system depends on its cap and metal chase cover. A gas unit needs a yearly venting and burner check. Knowing which you own tells you what your maintenance calendar should look like.
Set up a yearly routine
An annual sweep and inspection is the baseline for any wood-burning system, and an annual tune-up for a gas one. Put it on the calendar every fall so it never slips — it is the habit that keeps a chimney safe and catches small problems while they are cheap to fix.
Watch for warning signs
In your first season, note anything off: smoke spilling into the room, a strong odor, a poor draft, water stains near the chimney, or soot flaking into the firebox. Any of these is worth a call rather than another fire on top of it.
Know who to call
Keep a local chimney sweep’s number handy for your annual service and any surprises. For Sandwich and the surrounding towns, that’s us — seven days a week, and glad to help a new homeowner start off on the right foot.
Questions worth asking about the chimney
When you take over a Sandwich home, a few questions save you trouble. Ask the previous owner or agent when the chimney was last swept and inspected, whether it has ever had a chimney fire, and what type of fireplace or appliance it serves. Ask if there is any documentation of past chimney work. If answers are vague or unavailable — which is common — treat that as a reason to start with your own inspection rather than a leap of faith. Knowing the chimney’s history, or confirming its condition yourself, is part of settling into a new home safely.
