The Chimney Crown: The Part Most Rochelle Homeowners Overlook

By Chuck Lee · Imperial Chimney Sweepers · October 7, 2026

Ask most homeowners about their chimney crown and you get a blank look. But the crown is doing one of the most important jobs on the whole structure, and a failed one is behind many of the leaks we fix in Rochelle.

What it is

The crown is the sloped concrete or mortar slab at the very top of a masonry chimney, surrounding the flue. Its job is to shed rain and snow away from the masonry below — it is, in effect, the chimney’s roof. Do not confuse it with the cap, which is the metal hood over the flue opening; you need both working together.

What makes a good crown

A properly built crown has three features many older ones lack: a slope to drain water off the top, an overhang with a drip edge that throws runoff clear of the brick, and an expansion joint around the flue so the crown and the flue tile can move independently as they heat and cool. Without those, water pools, runs down the masonry, and cracks the joint where the crown meets the flue.

Why crowns fail

Most failed crowns we see were poured flat and flush to the brick, with no overhang — a construction shortcut that dooms them. Add freeze-thaw and simple age, and hairline cracks open into gaps that funnel water straight into the heart of the chimney, where it does slow, hidden damage all winter.

How to spot trouble

From the ground a cracked crown is hard to see, so it usually shows up indirectly: spalling brick just below the top, water stains inside near the chimney, or a finding during an inspection. By the time water reaches living space, the crown has often been failing for a while.

Seal or rebuild

We seal hairline cracks with a flexible, weatherproof crown coating that bridges small gaps, and rebuild a badly deteriorated crown with the proper slope and overhang it should have had from the start. Either way it is one of the highest-value repairs a Rochelle chimney can get, because a sound crown protects everything beneath it.

Crown coating or full rebuild?

Not every cracked crown needs to be torn off. When the damage is limited to hairline cracks and the crown is otherwise structurally intact, a flexible, weatherproof crown coating bridges the cracks and buys many more years at a fraction of the cost. When the crown is crumbling, badly cracked, or was poured wrong from the start — flat, with no slope or overhang — a rebuild is the right call, because coating a failing crown only delays the inevitable. We assess which situation your Rochelle chimney is in and recommend the honest fix, not the biggest one.
