When Does a Waterman Chimney Need Relining?

By Chuck Lee · Imperial Chimney Sweepers · September 28, 2026

The liner is your chimney’s inner shield — it contains the heat and gases of every fire and gives smoke a smooth path out. When it fails, relining restores safe operation, and for many older Waterman homes it is the fix that avoids a full rebuild.

What a liner does

A sound liner performs three critical jobs: it shields the surrounding brick and your home’s framing from intense heat, it protects the masonry from the acidic byproducts of combustion, and it provides the correctly sized passage that lets the chimney draft. When it cracks, all three protections fail at once.

Signs you need relining

Pieces of clay flue tile in the firebox, a chimney fire in the past, a new stove or insert that doesn’t match the existing flue size, or persistent draft and odor problems all point to relining. A camera inspection confirms it by showing the liner’s real condition along the full length of the flue.

Why a cracked liner is dangerous

A cracked liner can let heat reach nearby framing and let carbon monoxide seep into living space — two hazards you cannot see. That is why a damaged liner means a chimney should not be used until it is repaired or replaced. It is not a problem to put off to next season.

Stainless steel is the standard

We install UL 1777-listed stainless-steel liners sized to your appliance, in an alloy suited to your fuel. Stainless resists corrosion from wood and gas exhaust, handles high heat, and typically carries a long warranty. Liners come rigid for straight flues and flexible for the offsets common in older chimneys, and many installations are insulated to improve draft and meet clearance requirements.

Relining vs. rebuilding

When the masonry is sound but the liner has failed, relining is usually faster, cleaner and far more affordable than tearing down and rebuilding the chimney. It is completed in about a day and restores full safety and draft. For a Waterman homeowner with an aging clay-tile liner, a stainless reline brings the chimney back to safe service for decades.

How long a stainless liner lasts

A quality stainless-steel liner, correctly sized and installed, is a long-term investment — many carry warranties measured in decades, and with a yearly sweep they simply keep doing their job. The alloy resists the corrosion that eventually destroys clay tile and unlined masonry, and because it is a smooth, sealed passage, it also drafts better and stays cleaner than the flue it replaced. For a Waterman homeowner weighing a reline against repeated patch repairs on a failing clay liner, the stainless option usually wins on both safety and cost over the life of the chimney.
