Why Two-Story Homes Have Chimney Draft Quirks

By Chuck Lee · Imperial Chimney Sweepers · November 2, 2026

Draft problems in a two-story Cortland home can be puzzling, especially when the chimney itself seems fine. The answer often lies in how air moves through a taller house, not in the chimney at all.

The Stack Effect

Tall houses behave like chimneys themselves. Warm indoor air rises and escapes through upper levels, while cooler air is drawn in low. This stack effect creates a pressure difference between floors, and in winter it can be strong enough to pull air down your fireplace flue instead of letting smoke rise. The taller the house, the more pronounced this becomes. Homeowners across Cortland count on timely attention to keep their systems safe.

The Neutral Pressure Plane

Somewhere in the house there’s a level where indoor and outdoor pressure are equal, called the neutral pressure plane. Below it, the house pulls air in; above it, air pushes out. If your fireplace sits below that plane, the chimney tends to backdraft until a fire warms the flue enough to overcome it. A basement or first-floor fireplace in a tight two-story is the classic case. Our chimney inspection service covers exactly this kind of work.

Competing Exhaust

Second-floor bathroom fans, a powerful kitchen range hood, and the clothes dryer all pull air out of the house. In a tall, tight home, the make-up air they need can come down the chimney. Running the range hood while starting a fire is a common recipe for a smoky room. Simply providing make-up air, like cracking a nearby window, often restores normal draft.

Getting a Real Diagnosis

Because these issues come from the whole house working as a system, they’re easy to misdiagnose as a chimney fault. An inspection that considers flue size, chimney height, and household air pressure together will find the real cause. Sometimes the fix is a taller flue; sometimes it’s as simple as changing a habit.

Simple Tests You Can Try

Before assuming the worst, try a quick diagnostic. Open a window near the fireplace and see if the draft improves; if it does, house pressure is the culprit rather than the chimney. Turn off any running exhaust fans and the dryer, then start your fire and watch the difference. Priming the flue with a rolled newspaper also helps overcome a cold start. These small experiments tell you a great deal about what your chimney is fighting, and they often point to an easy habit change rather than a costly repair.
